About John Gregson & His Work

John Gregson graduated with a First Class Honours in Fine Art from Manchester Metropolitan University in 1971.

Following a successful career in Arts Education, John chose to paint full-time from 1995 and now lives and works full time is the small historic town of Aubeterre sur Dronne in the Charente, south west France.

Over the years he has painted a number of divers subjects, such as sunsets, flowers, architectural extracts, boats, wine, champagne, fish and shells.  Part of the reason for such diversity is that these are every day images which are around him in his region of France, but usually it is because something catches his in because of their texture and how they capture light and shadow and reflection.  in fact it is the reflected light he tries to capture it is this, he captures so well in his work.

Working purely in acrylics, John's eye for detail and intricate brush work seize a moment, so that the reflections and refractions of sheen and colour are caught to such a breathtaking degree that his paintings take on an a life like quality.  For more information on Johns painting technique please visit the Technique Page

I have chosen pictures of four paintings from four different series of works John has produced over approximately the last ten years, and although chosen at random, I think they give the visitor a snap shot of both the subject matter and style of John's work.  The first painting is from the series features an architectural extract from the church of St Jacques at Aubeterre and is the oldest work, whilst the white Iris is the most recent.  I must point out that these images have been resized for the purpose of the site and in fact the dimensions of these paintings do actually vary greatly.
